Amber Teething Necklaces are believed to have natural analgesic (painkilling) properties, and to help soothe and calm a baby through the difficult teething stage. They are knotted between each bead so that in the case of breakage beads will not roll everywhere. They are designed to be worn by babies, but only under constant adult supervision. It is advised to remove the necklaces when the baby is asleep. They are not designed to be chewed, the analgesic properties come from wearing the amber against the skin. There are various theories about how the amber actually works; One is that the warmth of the skin releases tiny amounts of healing oils from the amber, these are absorbed through the babies skin into the body. The healing effects of the oils are said to be calming, analgesic and antipyrexic (temperature reducing) amongst others. A second theory is that Amber is electronegative, and wearing it against the skin produces negative ionisation, which leads to a positive effect on the body. Either way, my son wore one throughout teething and it definately seemed to calm him and many of his friends who also wore them!
